Antique Silver Cream Jug
"The friendly cow all red and white,
I love with all my heart:
She gives me cream with all her might;
to eat with apple tart."
Robert Louis Stevenson (1850 - 1894)
With the growth in tea and coffee drinking in the early 18th Century the cream jug or milk jug was created. Cream jugs can come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Individual or as part of a set these jug are just as usable today as when they were made.
Most collected and sought after are the Cow Creamer. These beautiful model cows crafted in silver had hinged covers on their back for filling and a long curved tail acted as a handle. You poured the cream by gently tipping and it ran out of a hole in the cows mouth. You can expect to pay a high price for such a beast.
Almost as rare but much cheaper are decorative cream pails which often came with matching spoons or ladles. Very decorative and ornate piercings needed a glass liner and together with a swing handle looked impressive.
Traditional Helmet shaped milk jugs are more common but keep watching for novelty designs which do crop up from time to time but also attract a premium
