Antique Silver Sugar Bowls and Tongs
"A table, a chair, a bowl of fruit and a violin; what else does a man need to be happy.”
Albert Einstein(German born American Physicist who developed the special and general theories of relativity. Nobel Prize for Physics in 1921. 1879-1955)
Before drinking tea became fashionable sugar was stored away in a box and was used to sweeten alcoholic drinks such as punch. The explosion of tea drinking brought this mundane sweetner front stage and hence the need to display it properly.
Sugar bowls became crafted in Silver and needed to be as elegant and decorative as they silver items it would be used with. Early sugar bowls were often plain bowls with lift off covers but soon developed into vase shaped urns and highly decorative baskets.
These baskets, often boat shaped had swing handles and came with or without liners as well as gilding. Liners were necessary with highly decorative pierced sided baskets.
There are a wide variety available, from novelty designs such as coal scuttles to the traditional swing handled basket. All are very useable and highly collectable
