Troy Ounce
You will often see silver being listed for sale weighing one or more 'ounces'.
However usually the seller doesn't mention which type of 'ounce' they mean.
There are two different types of ounce - the Troy ounce and the Avoir Dupois (AV) ounce.
Precious metals in the commercial world are normally weighed in Troy ounces. AV ounces are the type that are used for everything else and are the type found on normal domestic kitchen scales etc.
Few people realise there is a significant difference between the two.
The way to discover whether an item is a Troy ounce or AV ounce is to ask for the weight in Grams.
1 Troy ounce = 31.103 grams 1 Avoir Dupois ounce = 28.349 grams
In my eBay listings I always list in AV Ounces and also show the Grams to avoid any confusion for buyers.
I also get asked what does 925 silver mean?
925 Sterling Silver is 925 parts in 1000 parts pure silver, ie 92.5% silver.
800 silver is 80% silver and is the common standard for Continental Silver for example Germany.
If you need to convert Tro ounce to other weights you may find this link useful.
I hope this helps.
