This is a most Collectable and Very Interesting Antique Victorian Hair Curling Tongs in their Fitted Silver Lighter Box. The outside of the silver box is very decorative and the hinged lid is heavily embossed with scrolls and flowers and is fully hallmarked. The sides also have an embossed pattern of scrolls and flowers. It has a brass line around the middle with a circular push in button for opening.

Open up the lid to reveal a brass interior which contains the pair of folding hair curling tongs which sit neatly into their compartment. They have hallmarked silver handles which have a pretty embossed scroll pattern to them. Take them out, and the handles unfold to open out the brass tongs. There is then a a two part compartment which would be filled with oil, the wick would be cut into small pieces and placed in the two removable holders which would then be placed back in and lit. There is a pair of brass supports which lay flat in the box, which open up for the tongs to be placed in them over the flame. When the heating and curling is finished there is a brass cover which screws back in place, so the remaining oil cannot escape in readiness for the next use. (Thank goodness for modern means of curling hair!!) This box does come complete with some wick, but I have to stress that I have not tested these, as I cannot post any item that has any remnants of flammable liquids, but there is absolutely no reason whatsoever why it should not work perfectly.

Curling tongs were the precursor to today’s modern curling iron. The first recorded use of heated tongs to curl or straighten hair was in 1872. Marcel Grateau, a Parisian stylist used heated tongs in an attempt to curl and straighten hair. Over time, this method for styling hair became quite popular and the modern curling iron was born.

Please see my paragraph below regarding additional photographs, where you will see this item in more detail

Assay Office: LONDON

Date: 1896/97

Makers Marks: FBM (Frederick Bradford Macrae)

Dimensions: The box is 5.25 inches long, just under 2.25 inches wide and 1.75 inches wide. The tongs when extended are 9 inches long. The total weight is 561g (so postage for overseas purchasers will be high – please see details as listed for your particular Country)

Condition: It is in very good condition, with just a few very very minor dings to the plain rims on the underside of the base. If I had to be extremely critical there is also one very very small little dent to one top edge of the lid, but this is very very small and really hardly noticeable

Remarks: This really is a very interesting antique Victorian silver item and a must for any collector

Antique and vintage silver by its very nature has been previously used. Silver is a comparatively soft metal and a combination of many years use invariably leaves its mark. I do endeavour to describe all items accurately but do not expect any antique to be in “as new condition”.
