Antique Art Nouveau French Silver 5 Piece Serving Set. It includes a Carving Knife, Carving Fork, Ham Hock Bone Holder and a Pair of Salad Servers (I think). The hollow silver handles have a pretty embossed floral pattern to both sides The carving knife has a steel blade with “Paris” engraved into the front. The neck and prongs of the carving fork are also steel and so to is the actual holder and turn key screw on the ham hock holder. The large serving spoon and large 3 pronged fork are salad servers I think and the bowl and prongs and neck are of a cream material, but I am afraid that I am unsure of what this is. I have looked at other listings and some are described as “white ivorine” some horn, bone, celluolid or someone described theirs as “a natural substance, hard white and opaque”, so I cannot confirm. This set comes complete in its original box which has “Barbe Rouen” stamped in the inside material to the lid. The outside of the box I can best describe as having a “mottled” pattern
Identifying Marks: Each of the collars are stamped with the Head of Minerva with a “1″ so confirms that it is 950 standard silver. The makers marks of “GU” with is Gustave Veyrat and dates this set between 1894 – 1911
Dimensions: The two Forks and Spoon 11.25 inches long in total, the Carving Knife just over 12.75 inches long in total and the Ham Hock Holder 6.75 inches long in total. The silver handles average 5 inches long
Condition: Overall this very useable set is in very good condition, with just a few little minor shallow dents to the handles and some light surface scratching, which is only to be expected on metal items and is commensurate with age and use. The cream material on the fork and spoon is in good condition on both items. The box is in good condition, inside and out
Remarks: This is a very good, large Antique French silver Art Nouveau serving set, that would be an impressive set to have in any home
Antique and vintage silver by its very nature has been previously used. Silver is a comparatively soft metal and a combination of many years use invariably leaves its mark. I do endeavour to describe all items accurately but do not expect any antique to be in “as new condition”.
