This is a very good Large Circular Lidded Butter Dish. It is of circular/drum shape and has a pretty pierced decoration to the sides and a lined pattern to the top and base rims. It has a pull off cover which has a squiggle (although hard to describe) shaped handle, and it stands on 3 ball feet. It comes complete with a blue glass liner and is made from a good guage of silver and has clear hallmarks
Assay Office: CHESTER
Date: 1902/03
Makers Marks: JJ (Jay Richard Attenborough & Co – (James Charles Jay)
Dimensions: 4.5 inches in diameter and 3.25 to the top of the handle. The actual depth of the dish is 2 inches. The silver weighs 222g and the total weight including the glass liner is 619g
Condition: It is in very good condition
Remarks: This is a very good antique solid silver circular lidded butter dish, although it could also be used for serving little pieces of cheese, a sugar bowl, a serving dish for just about anything and when not in use makes a lovely display item. It will also be of interest to collectors of Chester silver
Antique and vintage silver by its very nature has been previously used. Silver is a comparatively soft metal and a combination of many years use invariably leaves its mark. I do endeavour to describe all items accurately but do not expect any antique to be in “as new condition”.
