Large Antique Georgian (George III) Silver Swing Handled Basket

Large Antique Georgian (George III) Silver Swing Handled Basket. It is oval in shape with slightly pointed ends. It has a floral and garland engraved border pattern on top of a lined textured background around the top of the dish. It also has an engraved shaped oval pattern to the centre of the base. The swing handle has a lined pattern to it and the same lined pattern around the base rim of the raised oval pedestal foot. It is made from a good guage of silver and has clear hallmarks. The underside of the base also has an engraving on it which reads “G*P*S to R& E *C”

Makers Marks: AP (Possibly Abraham Peterson)

Dimensions: 13.25 inches long, 9.25 inches wide at its widest middle point, just over 4 inches tall when the handle is down and 10.25 inches tall when the handle is in the upright position. It weighs 685g

Condition: Overall it is in very good condition, but there are a few of little pin prick dings (a couple on the underside and not showing in the inside). The underside of the base (the curved part inside the foot, where the engraving has been done), is quite scratched, although unless you turn it upside down you would not see it. There is also some light surface scratching to the rest of the dish, which is only to be expected on a metal item, but this is minor and commensurate with its 207 years of age and use, and all sounds worse than it actually is, but I do try to list my items as accurately as possible

Remarks: This really is a lovely antique Georgian Solid Silver Swing Handled Basket, ideal filled with fruit and placed in the centre of a table or sideboard. It would also make an impressive basket for serving cakes, and it would also make a lovely bread basket, placed in the centre of a dinner table. When not in use it makes a lovely display piece that would look stunning in any home
