Silver Plate and Carved Oak Large and Heavy Biscuit Barrel. It is in the shape of a wooden beer barrel and the wooden body has a central border of embossed carved oak tree? leaves. It has a silver plated lid which has a pretty engraved wriggle work pattern around the decorative finial, a swing handle and 3 silver plated bands. There is also a large shield shape cartouche in the centre of the body which is still blank, so it could be personalised. Inside it has a fixed white china/porcelain lining
Identifying Marks: It is stamped “A EPNS H C Co S” confirming makers are Hammond Creake & Co and dates it between 1886 – 1935. It is also stamped “1909″, so this could be the actual date of manufacture or it could be a registration or catalogue mark
Dimensions: 5.75 inches tall when the handle is down, and 10 inches tall when the handle is in the upright position. It is 6.5 inches in diameter and it weighs 1687g
Condition: Overall it is in very good condition but the wood is a little lighter in some areas, which could have been caused by overcleaning of the silver bands, but this is minor. If I had to be extrememly critical then the handle is a little mis-shapen but this again is very minor
Remarks: This really is a lovely silver plated and oak carved old biscuit barrel. Ideal for everyday use, especially with the cold china/porcelain liner, which would keep the biscuits nice and cool and fresh
