Antique Silver Georgian Tankard Hallmarked London 1783. It has an embossed leaf and scroll pattern to the slightly tapering body (being narrower at the top and wider at the base). There is a lined band decoration at the base and then underneath this an engraved pattern (which I can best describe as being half leaves) which gives it a skirt effect. It has a chunky leaf capped question marked shaped handle and it is made from a good guage of silver and therefore is of a good weight and it has clear hallmarks. It does have fancy entwined engraved initials in the large scroll bordered cartouche but they are so fancy that I am not sure how many letters or what they are.
Assay Office: LONDON
Date: 1783/84
Makers Marks: WT (possibly William Turton)
Dimensions: 4.75 inches tall, the top diameter just under 3 inches, the base 3.5 inches in diameter and it is 5.25 inches wide including the handle. It weighs 324g. It holds 3/4 pint (15 fl oz)
Condition: It is in very good condition apart from two minor imperfections. At the rear near the handle there is evidence of a very old professional repair in the rim, but you have to look extrememly close through a magnifying glass to see it, and if I hadn’t pointed it out, you would probably not even see it, but I do try to list my items as accurately as possible. There is also a very minor split in the rim at the front, and does not go right through, but again this is very minor . There of course is also some very light surface scratching, which is only to be expected on a metal item, but this is minor and commensurate with age and use and particularly in this tamkard’s case its 228 years of age
Remarks: This is a very good antique Georgian solid silver tankard, ideal for drinking your favourite beer or lager or a super addition to any collection of Georgian silver
Overseas purchasers please note: Due to the value of this item, I am having to limit this to UK purchasers only
Antique and vintage silver by its very nature has been previously used. Silver is a comparatively soft metal and a combination of many years use invariably leaves its mark. I do endeavour to describe all items accurately but do not expect any antique to be in “as new condition”.
