Toddy ladle Inset Silver Coin 1787 Antique Georgian Toddy Ladle. The silver bowl is oval in shape with a pouring lip at each end and has a sort of hammer finish to it, but then again it could have quite literally been used as a hammer! which would be unforgivable. It has a Georgian coin inset into the base which has George III’s head and then words surrounding it and then the back of the coin has differnt coats of arms (please see the paragraph below regarding additional photographs, as close ups of both sides of the coin can be seen). I have done a bit of research into the coin, but I have to say that I am not sure if it is a shilling or a silver sixpence as they both look the same. I can however confirm that one of the coats of arms does have the Semee of Hearts that is mentioned, but I am afraid I have no idea as to what significance this is, as some coins I have seen state that they do not have this.
To the underside of the bowl there are two fancy engraved letters which I think are “FS”. It has a silver neck to the base of the long part twisted dark wooden handle finishing with a silver tip. It has no hallmarks, but the coin is dated 1787
Dimensions: 12 inches long in total, the bowl 4 inchdes wide and just under 2.25 inches in depth and 0.75 inch deep. The wooden part of the handle is 7 inches long
Condition: As stated above, I am not sure if the bowl has a hammer finish, but it does have a shallow crease in the bowl. The silver neck of the handle is also a little bent, but this is minor. Please however, bear in mind that this ladle is 225 years old. The coin is in very good condition
Remarks: A good Georgian Toddy Ladle, still ideal for use today, but an interesting piece of Georgian silver and a must for any collector
Antique and vintage silver by its very nature has been previously used. Silver is a comparatively soft metal and a combination of many years use invariably leaves its mark. I do endeavour to describe all items accurately but do not expect any antique to be in “as new condition”.
