Antique Victorian Silver Christening Mug. It has 3 bright cut circle and line borders around the body and a crisp coloured gilt interior, so it oozes quality. It stands on 4 large ball feet and it has a question mark shaped scroll handle. It is made from a good guage of silver and has clear hallmarks, apart from the first letter of the makers mark which is a bit rubbed. I have listed this as a christening mug, but it would make a perfectly good small tankard for anyone.
Assay Office: LONDON
Date: 1871/72
Makers Marks: JEBWJ (John, Edward, Walter & John Barnard – Barnard & Sons Ltd)
Dimensions: 4 inches wide including the handle, the actual body just under 3 inches in diameter and it is 3.25 inches tall. It weighs 168g and it holds 9 fl oz, so just under 1/2 pint
Condition: It is in very good condition apart from a slight impression of one of the feet inside the base, but this is very very minor, and not really noticeable, but felt I had to point it out as I try to list my items as accurately as possible
Remarks: This really is a very good antique Victorian solid silver christening mug, of lovely quality and made by a very collectable and sought after maker
Antique and vintage silver by its very nature has been previously used. Silver is a comparatively soft metal and a combination of many years use invariably leaves its mark. I do endeavour to describe all items accurately but do not expect any antique to be in “as new condition”.
