This is a Large Silver Childs Rattle & Whistle. It has has two circular shapes which form the main body having embossed patterns to them. The larger one has 6 bells hanging from it and the smaller one having 4 bells hanging from it. The top of the rattle is a whistle and underneath the blower has a pretty embossed flower pattern to the neck which also has a loop link so it could be attached to a piece of ribbon etc. The handle or teether is a coral colour but I cannot confirm it is real coral.
The only marks I can find are the intials GU which is the makers mark for George Unite (a very good and collectable silver maker) which if correct dates it between 1832 – 1921 and another series of letters which form a word, but I am afraid that I cannot make them out. I cannot however find any Assay Office or Lion Passant Mark. I have carried out an acid test and can confirm it is made of Silver. I am also confident it is solid silver and not silver plated. Without the existance of the assay office stamps to correspond with the makers marks visible on the item it can only be an assumption that it is made by George Unite, however regardless of this fact it is a really nice silver item in its own right.
Assay Office: I cannot find one
Date: Possibly 1832 – 1921 (in conjunction with the makers marks)
Makers Marks: GU (George Unite & Sons)
Dimensions: 5.75 inches long including the handle, the actual silver length is 3.75 inches long. It is 1.5 inches wide at tis widest point. It weighs 60g but this of course includes the coral handle
Condition: It is in very good condition
Remarks: This is a large and impressive childs silver rattle that has a lovely comforting jangly noise to it and the whistle is in good working order
Antique and vintage silver by its very nature has been previously used. Silver is a comparatively soft metal and a combination of many years use invariably leaves its mark. I do endeavour to describe all items accurately but do not expect any antique to be in “as new condition”.
